Introducing the Oklahoma Goldback 1/10th Note – A Monument to Liberty, Honor, and the Spirit of the Thunderbird

The Oklahoma 100 Goldback contains 1/10th of a troy ounce of 24-karat gold and is the highest denomination in the Goldback series—a landmark in the world’s first voluntary, spendable gold currency. Crafted for both collectors and those seeking meaningful, fractional gold, this note represents a profound tribute to courage, sacrifice, and freedom.

Each Goldback is produced using cutting-edge vacuum deposition technology, embedding .9999 fine gold within resilient polymer layers. The result is a durable, flexible note that honors history while offering real-world utility and long-term value.

The Oklahoma 100 Goldback highlights the virtue Libertas—Liberty—through a powerful tribute to the 45th Infantry Division, known as the “Thunderbird Division.” Formed in 1923 from the Oklahoma National Guard, this storied unit included a remarkable number of Native American service members from the Five Civilized Tribes. Their legacy was forever etched into history on April 29, 1945, when they helped liberate the Dachau Concentration Camp in one of World War II’s most pivotal and heartbreaking moments.

At the heart of the design stands Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty and a potent symbol of American ideals. Draped in a gown patterned after the stars and stripes—and inspired by both the Oklahoma State Seal and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar—she stands tall with a shield bearing Oklahoma’s Great Seal, which includes the emblems of the Five Civilized Tribes, signifying unity and shared sacrifice. Her belt features the Osage warrior shield, a peace pipe, and an olive branch, echoing the balance of strength and diplomacy found on the state flag.

Near her ankle lies a broken shackle—an unspoken but powerful symbol of liberation. A Star of David rests over her heart, honoring the Jewish lives saved at Dachau. Behind her, the theater of war unfolds: Sherman tanks roll forward, Willys jeeps navigate rough terrain, and fighter planes streak through stormy skies. A bald eagle soars above, sacred in Native tradition, with a bolt of lightning behind it—evoking the divine power of the Thunderbird, the namesake of the division. In the foreground, infantry soldiers advance, their helmets marked with the Thunderbird insignia. From one soldier’s pack flows a banner bearing a single word: Libertas.

Etched into the base of the scene is a powerful reminder: “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” This 100 Goldback is more than a currency—it is a testament to the Oklahoma National Guard, to the Native nations who gave so much, and to the enduring legacy of those who have fought for freedom in every generation.
