Utah Goldbacks — The Series That Started It All

Utah Goldbacks — The Series That Started It All

Utah is where Goldbacks began.

In 2011, Utah became the first state in modern American history to recognize gold and silver as legal tender. That decision didn't just make history. It created the conditions for an entirely new form of physical gold. The Goldback was invented in Utah, launched in Utah, and is more widely accepted in Utah than anywhere else on earth.

Today, thousands of Utah merchants accept Goldbacks as payment. The Utah series remains the most circulated Goldback series in existence.

If you're new to Goldbacks, Utah is where the story starts.

For the basics, read What is a Goldback? It covers how the notes work and how much gold each one holds.

What Makes the Utah Goldback Series Different

Every Goldback contains real, physical 99.9% pure 24-karat gold, embedded directly into the note using a vacuum deposition process developed over two decades. The gold isn't a coating. It isn't a certificate. It's physically inside the note.

What sets the Utah series apart is the artwork. Each denomination features a different allegorical figure honoring the classical virtues Utah was built on:

  • 1 Goldback — Prudentiae (Prudence)
  • 5 Goldback — Veritas (Truth)
  • 10 Goldback — Virtue
  • 25 Goldback — Victoria (Victory)
  • 50 Goldback — Libertas (Liberty)

Five denominations. Five figures. Each note holds a precise amount of real gold and tells part of Utah's story.

The 2026 Refresh: All-New Utah Artwork

In 2026 Goldback refreshed the Utah series with all-new artwork and three new denominations, the ¼, ½ and 2. The first print run is the Alpha edition, and it is the Utah series GoldATM now carries.

  • ¼ Goldback: Justitia (Justice), at Balanced Rock in Arches National Park. 1/4,000 troy oz.
  • ½ Goldback: Patientia (Endurance), a pioneer woman pushing a handcart through Emigration Canyon. 1/2,000 troy oz.
  • 1 Goldback: Prudentia (Prudence), a Ute woman near Delicate Arch with a mountain lion. 1/1,000 troy oz.
  • 2 Goldback: Gratia (Grace), the 1848 Miracle of the Gulls. 1/500 troy oz.
  • 5 Goldback: Devotionis (Devotion), before the Salt Lake City Temple. 1/200 troy oz.
  • 10 Goldback: Aeternitas (Eternity), the 1991 Utahraptor discovery near Moab. 1/100 troy oz.
  • 25 Goldback: Disciplina (Discipline), a snowboarder above Park City, host of the 2002 Winter Olympics. 1/40 troy oz.
  • 50 Goldback: Libertas (Liberty), driving the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit in 1869. 1/20 troy oz.

How Much Gold Is in Each Utah Goldback?

Each denomination holds a fixed, precise amount of gold:

  • 1 Goldback — 1/1,000 troy oz of 99.9% pure 24k gold
  • 5 Goldback — 1/200 troy oz
  • 10 Goldback — 1/100 troy oz
  • 25 Goldback — 1/40 troy oz
  • 50 Goldback — 1/20 troy oz

The gold content is fixed. The retail price moves with the daily gold rate, updated every day at 10am MST. See current pricing at the shop.

What Sets the Utah Series Apart

The Utah series, as the original series, has:

  • The largest existing user base and merchant network
  • The longest history of any series, dating to 2019

Goldback prices move with the price of gold, which can fall as well as rise. None of this is investment advice.

Utah Goldbacks vs. Gold Coins

Gold coins and Utah Goldbacks both contain real gold. They're different tools.

Gold coins (American Gold Eagle, Krugerrand, etc.) typically come in 1 oz, ½ oz, or ¼ oz denominations, starting at several thousand dollars at current prices. They're priced close to spot, with minimal fabrication premium. They're built for storage.

Utah Goldbacks start with a single 1 Goldback note containing 1/1,000 of a troy ounce. You can buy one denomination, several, or work your way up through all five. No vault required. No minimums.

The premium over spot reflects the fabrication process, the artwork, and the utility of holding gold in a spendable format. For people who want physical gold they can actually use and not just store, Goldbacks occupy a category coins can't.

Where Utah Goldbacks Are Accepted

Utah is the most Goldback-friendly state in the country. Thousands of businesses accept them as payment, from local retailers to service providers. The acceptance network has grown since the series launched in 2019.

Outside Utah, Goldbacks are increasingly accepted by merchants in Wyoming, Nevada, New Hampshire, and other sound money states. The network grows as each new state series launches.
